A new era of Manchester Basketball will be led by local stalwart Callum Jones, who has been appointed Head Coach for the city’s new franchise, taking the club into its first season in the all new Super League Basketball.
Jones has spent 11 years in Manchester as a player, alongside two years at Worcester Wolves and one at Sheffield Sharks. He became Manchester Giants’ all-time leading points scorer in his spell with Giants and was a member of Team England’s Commonwealth Games team that competed in the Gold Coast in 2008. The Jones family are synonymous with basketball in Manchester, Callum following in the footsteps of father Jeff to lead the city’s flagship franchise.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to lead the city’s new franchise into a new era of British basketball,” reflected Callum.
“I share the new owners’ vision to build this franchise on a sustainable footing and I’m delighted to be part of that building with coaching the new team. We appreciate the fans’ patience over the last few months in particular, and are looking forward to getting to work now.”
“We would love for all fans of basketball in the city to get behind this new franchise and get Belle Vue rocking!”
Aside from assisting last years’ side, Callum led his Manchester Metropolitan University’s Men’s side to BUCS success last year winning the BUCS Trophy.
“We, as a new franchise, know the importance of embracing the vibrant basketball community in the city,” commented Ben Pierson.
“Callum does not require much of an introduction from me. He, and his family, have been dedicated to this programme for many years. Callum has a fantastic knowledge of the game and has spent most of his storied playing career – and coaching career - here in Manchester, at both the professional and University levels. It’s an exciting appointment for us, and we thank him for joining the organisation at such a key junction for our future.”
“We recognise the fans have had to stay patient and we really appreciate that. We are taking time to ensure we put the right building blocks in place for a sustainable future both on and off the court.”
“Callum and the organisation have worked tirelessly to put together a roster that will allow us to compete on day one. We are thrilled with the team he’s recruited, and hope you share in our excitement to see them on court under his leadership.”
Watch Callum’s first home game in charge of Manchester Basketball this Sunday at 3pm, tickets are available for just £10.
